More Info More About This Product

The Vicus were a people that developed in the northern zone of Peru around the X century AD in the oasis-like valleys that exist north of the large Sechura desert in Piura. This culture was influenced by civilizations that developed along the tropical shores of present-day Ecuador, Colombia, and Panama. Its origins are still obscure, dating back to the V century BC. Vicus art is characterized by a strong naturalistic expression of animals and human beings. In the Vicus expressions in ceramic, anthropomorphic animals with human faces and expressions are often found. Human beings were represented in their most direct and natural form and even in their purely sensual and animal aspects. The outstanding achievements made in this culture regarding quality of sculpture and ceramic finishes were made possible by the use of fine slips and clays. On the other hand, they used just three colors: white, red, and black. The most distinctive painted decoration of this culture was the one achieved by using the technique of "negative" painting, with predominately geometric designs.
