More Info More About This Product

Lambayeque is a group of valleys located on the northern coast of Peru. Although the valleys are in the middle of a large desert, they were irrigated by seasonal flooding from the largest rivers along the coast. This characteristic made the Lambayeque and La Libertad cultures, in a neighboring valley complex, perhaps the richest of all in Peru. In this zone flourished the Mochica (100 to 500 AD) and Chimu (900 to 1200 AD) with regional cultural developments such as Sipan and Lambayeque, small local chiefdoms. Many of the works of art from this region can be considered the most realistic, in a figurative sense, among Peruvian cultures. The ""huaco retratos"" (portrait vessels) are famous burial ceramics that portrayed individuals representative of their society. The attributes of rank, attire, and hierarchy were especially detailed in these ""huacos retratos"", an expression of their high level of social organization."
